Oklahoma: Life is Sweet in the Middle

Oklahoma – home of tornados,

Oklahoma – home of earthquakes,

Oklahoma – home of floods,

Oklahoma- home of hail as big as grapefruits,

all of which can occur in one day.

Oklahoma, home of people who believe cockfighting is the last bastion of the American Constitution,

Oklahoma, home of people who catfish noodle on reality tv shows,

Oklahoma, home of people who practice their own brand of religion – OU football,

Oklahoma, home of John Birch and Libertarian legislators who believe we should do away with all public education.

So people ask all the time:

“Why do you stay?”

Because of what’s in the middle.

The middle is the sweetest part of Oklahoma.

It has the best of the best of us.image

Native Americans whose ancestors came to Oklahoma under the worst of circumstances and have deeply enriched our culture.

People whose grandparents and great-grandparents made the land run and were smart enough and physically able enough to survive the Oklahoma elements.

People who came to Oklahoma for a trip, on business, for college, thinking they were going to hate it and who end up staying because they fall in love with the unique people in this place.

Farmers who will give a friendly lift-that-index-finger-ever-so-slightly howdy to everyone they meet on the road and will stop and help you fix a tire, pull you out of the mud, push you up a hill in the ice, and literally give you their blood.

People who run to a tragedy rather than away from it.

Will Rogers, Ralph Ellison, Wiley Post, Maria Tallchief, Gordon Cooper, Clara Luper, Patti Page, Wilma Mankiller, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Jeanne Kilpatrick, Jim Thorpe, Johnny Bench, Leon Russell, Alfre Woodard, Dr. Phil, Kristin Chenoweth, Sam Walton, Mickey Mantle, Paul Harvey……

It’s easy to forget the best of us when we are faced with the worst.

Oklahoma education, isn’t it time to lead from the sweet middle?

Support those blogs and encourage new ones that support Oklahoma education from the sweet middle?

Organize from the sweet middle?

Register the voters in the sweet middle?

Become politically active from the sweet middle?

Back candidates from the sweet middle?

The porch thinks so.

What in the world are we waiting for?
